Laos, one of the poorest nations in South East Asia, is slowly emerging as a holiday destination. Touted as the “Jewel of the Mekong”, Laos is a mountainous country bordered by China, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar.
Vientiane, the capital, is one of Laos’ largest cities but retains a small town feel of friendliness and hospitality. Positioned on the banks of the Mekong, Vientiane is home to many temples. Wat Si Saket is the oldest temple. You can wander around this temple and find hundreds of hidden alcoves containing different images and carvings of the Buddha. Travel around the city is best managed by tuk tuk, similar to a pedicab. Bicycles can also be arranged through your hotel. After a day of exploring the city, visitors enjoy going to one of the many beer gardens along the Mekong. Try the local beer, Beerlao.
There are many small villages throughout Laos that are worth a visit. Vang Vieng is popular with hikers and backpackers for caving and tubing. Si Phan Don is home to four thousand tiny islands in the Mekong River and the Ban Na Lan trail is a two day hike and eco- tour through the lush countryside.
Many tours of Laos can be arranged at your hotel. Bike tours are very popular. Biking-Laos.com operates tours from Luang Prabang. This is a great way to experience local culture and Laos’ verdant countryside. Slow boat tours are also well liked. Beginning at the Thailand border, you will float down the Mekong for two days and end at Luang Prabang.
You will enjoy the local foods of Laos. Fresh fruits and vegetables are plentiful. The national dish is laap which consists of ground meat, spices, lime juice, and hot chili. Sticky rice is also found in many cafes and it is eaten with your hand from a half-moon gourd.
You will want to dress modestly while visiting temples. This usually means long sleeves and long pants. Shoes should also be removed before you cross thresholds. Please be respectful of the monks, many who have taken vows of silence and may not want to be photographed.
The main airport in Laos is the Wattay Airport. It offers limited international service. There are no direct flights from Europe and you must make a connection through one of Laos’ neighboring countries. A Laos visa can be purchased at the airport upon entry. Once arriving, be prepared for a very relaxing holiday. A trendy slogan-Laos PDR, (please don’t rush) - says it all.
